Artist's Comments

this was taken at a temple in kyoto. at all the temples and shrines you can buy fortunes, and if they turn out to be bad fortunes, you tie them to a specific place in the temple (each temple is a little different) and pray that they won't come true/will be better. this particular temple was really cool to me because it was the first one where i saw the fortunes tied onto these little trees. anywayyy.

edit: something i wrote more recently (2009) that was inspired by the title of this picture:

Paper Prayers
Tied Tight to reaching branches,
Knotted Carefully with broken heartstrings
Hopes, Dreams, Unspoken Fears
Quietly Struggle toward the sky
From a place so Terribly Close to earth
Desperate To Fly
Before, like Delicate tissue,
They crumble into Dust and Disappear
Left All Alone
Just One more unanswered,
Unanswerable Paper Longing.

So pretty, I've read about this before, but I'd only seen it in anime and not real life.

That temple looks so pretty, do you have more pictures of it? :)
